Being diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing treatment affects a patient both physically and emotionally. Breast Cancer Haven offers a free programme of care to help patients and those supporting them during this difficult time. Havens are welcoming day centres staffed by a specialist team who provide support, information and complementary therapies before, during and after medical treatment.
“There is an atmosphere of support and acceptance on stepping into the building and the support of other Visitors through shared experience. The counselling has really helped me to tackle a lot of the personal stuff around the cancer in a way no-one else can and it has helped me deal with family issues which impinge on my health. The Nutrition got me sorted and more in control with the natural feelings of helplessness and the yoga has been terrific for the post op and feelings of physical and spiritual wellbeing. The Art Therapy has potential which I have not fully explored. In summary, the Haven has given me huge support and strength to cope with the huge fears and unknowingness of cancer. They still lurk but no longer overwhelm me”.
History of Breast Cancer Haven
In 1997 Sara Davenport founded Breast Cancer Haven. The idea for the charity came following the experience of her children's nanny, Wendy Ricketts, who was diagnosed with the illness. Sara was concerned by the lack of emotional support and information available to people with breast cancer. Believing that "no-one should have to face breast cancer alone", Sara sold her art business and put all of her energy into creating Breast Cancer Haven.
Despite a welcome increase in breast cancer awareness, Breast Cancer Haven remains the only charity that promotes integrated healthcare specifically designed to support people through their breast cancer treatment. We provide up to date support, information and complementary therapies to people who need help right now.
Breast Cancer Haven in London is housed in an old Welsh Presbyterian church which has also been used as a dance and drama school. It was virtually derelict when Sara bought in 1998, but with the support of many generous individuals and companies, and the expertise of architect Martin Hay, the building was transformed into the wonderful peaceful and healing environment which is now Breast Cancer Haven
Breast Cancer Haven in London was opened in February 2000 and has provided nearly 52,000 appointments to date.
Breast Cancer Haven in Hereford was opened January 2004 and has provided 7,000 appointments to date.
We aim to open our next Haven in Yorkshire at the end of 2008.
